If you own a US LLC or C corporation but live outside the United States, your banking choice affects more than where you store dollars. It determines how easily you can receive Stripe payouts, pay international contractors, reconcile books, and document operations for investors.

The short answer is straightforward: Mercury is usually the default for VC-backed startups, Relay is strongest for bookkeeping-first operations, and a Wise Business account is best for holding and converting multiple currencies. They are not exact substitutes, and many founders use Mercury or Relay alongside Wise.

Mercury vs Wise vs Relay at a Glance

  • Mercury: Best for technology startups, Delaware C corporations, fundraising, and a polished US banking workflow. Banking services are provided by partner banks, not Mercury itself.
  • Relay: Best for LLCs and operating businesses that want multiple accounts, spending controls, and accounting-oriented cash management. Relay is a financial technology company, not a bank.
  • Wise Business: Best for collecting, holding, converting, and sending multiple currencies. Wise is primarily a payments and money-transmission platform rather than a conventional US business bank.

All three require compliance review. Forming a Delaware company does not guarantee approval, and no provider publishes a universal maximum balance or transaction limit that applies to every customer.

Onboarding Requirements for a Non-Resident Founder

Mercury

A typical Mercury bank non-resident application requires a US-registered company, EIN, formation documents, company address, operating address, founder passport, ownership details, and a clear description of the business. Mercury may also request a website, contracts, invoices, expected transaction volumes, source of funds, or evidence of US operations.

You do not normally need a Social Security number or US home address, but Mercury supports founders and businesses only in eligible jurisdictions and industries. Initial applications often take a few business days; enhanced review can extend the process to one or two weeks.

Relay

For Relay bank US onboarding, expect to provide an EIN, formation documents, beneficial-owner information, identity documents, a US business address, and evidence of the company’s activities. Relay’s eligibility can depend on your country of residence, entity type, and ability to satisfy address and identity checks.

Relay can work well for US LLCs, but international founders should confirm current residency eligibility before relying on it. Reviews may finish within several business days, while manual verification takes longer.

Wise Business

A Wise Business account can be opened for companies registered in supported countries, including eligible US entities. Wise verifies the company, directors, and owners and may request formation documents, EIN evidence, proof of address, contracts, or invoices.

Verification can take a few business days, but complex ownership structures or unsupported residence countries may cause delays. Availability of account details, cards, currencies, and features varies by country.

Fees, ACH, Wires, and Practical Limits

Mercury has no monthly fee for its standard account and generally does not charge for standard domestic ACH transfers. Domestic USD wires are generally free. International USD wires may be free when sent in USD, while intermediary or receiving banks can deduct approximately $15–$50. Currency-exchange services carry separate conversion costs. Premium Mercury plans and treasury products have their own pricing and eligibility rules.

Relay offers a no-monthly-fee Starter plan, while paid tiers add features such as faster payments and expanded automation. Standard ACH transfers are generally free; same-day ACH and outgoing wires can incur fees depending on the plan. International wire charges and intermediary-bank deductions may also apply. Check the live pricing page because Relay has changed plan names and fee schedules over time.

Wise usually charges a one-time setup fee for business account details in some markets, plus transaction-based fees. Conversion pricing commonly starts below 1% for major currency pairs but varies by currency, amount, and payment method. Receiving domestic payments may be free for certain account details, while incoming wires and outgoing transfers can have fixed and variable charges.

Do not choose solely from an advertised transfer ceiling. ACH and wire limits are risk-based and may differ by account age, verification status, destination, and payment history. Ask support about your expected monthly volume before moving a large funding round, inventory payment, or contractor payroll.

Accounting, Stripe, and Automation Integrations

Mercury connects directly with QuickBooks Online and Xero, and it supports common finance workflows involving Stripe, PayPal, Gusto, Ramp, and Brex. Its API and Zapier-compatible ecosystem make it attractive if you want to automate payment notifications, reconciliation tasks, or approval workflows.

Relay is designed around bookkeeping. You can create multiple checking accounts to separate operating cash, payroll, taxes, and profit, then sync transactions with QuickBooks Online or Xero. Relay also integrates with tools such as Gusto and Plaid-supported applications. Its account structure is particularly useful for agencies, e-commerce businesses, and LLCs following the Profit First method.

Wise offers connections to QuickBooks and Xero, although feature availability depends on the account’s country. It also provides batch payments and an API for international payouts. Wise is often the cleaner option for paying 20 contractors in different currencies, while Mercury or Relay is usually better as the primary ledger for US operating expenses.

Stripe typically expects the payout account’s legal name and entity details to match your Stripe account. A mismatch between the company name, EIN record, bank profile, and Stripe profile can delay verification or payouts.

International Transfers and Multi-Currency Operations

Wise is the clear leader for multi-currency operations. It lets eligible businesses hold more than 40 currencies, convert funds at the mid-market exchange rate with a disclosed fee, and obtain local account details for selected currencies. That can reduce friction when billing clients in GBP or EUR and paying suppliers without routing every transaction through USD.

Mercury is stronger when your company primarily earns, raises, and spends US dollars. It supports international wires and offers currency-exchange functionality, but it is not designed as a broad multi-currency wallet. For a SaaS startup collecting USD through Stripe and paying a few overseas contractors, Mercury plus Wise is often more practical than forcing one account to handle everything.

Relay supports international payments but remains centered on US cash management and accounting controls. It is a better fit when your accountant needs clean expense buckets and your cross-border volume is occasional rather than central to the business.

For any international payment, compare the full delivered amount—not only the visible transfer fee. Exchange-rate markup, correspondent-bank deductions, card funding fees, and recipient-bank charges can materially change the cost.

Which Account Should You Choose?

  • Choose Mercury if you run a venture-backed or venture-scale startup, expect investor wires, use Stripe, and want a strong US-dollar operating account.
  • Choose Relay if you run a profitable LLC, agency, or e-commerce company and prioritize account segmentation, expense controls, and bookkeeping.
  • Choose Wise Business if you invoice or pay in several currencies and need transparent foreign-exchange pricing and local payment details.
  • Use two providers if you need resilience. Mercury plus Wise is a common pairing: Mercury handles US operations and Wise handles conversion and international payouts. Relay plus Wise serves a similar purpose for bookkeeping-led businesses.

Avoid treating any fintech account as your only contingency. Providers can pause transfers or request documents during compliance reviews. Keep formation records, EIN confirmation, contracts, invoices, source-of-funds evidence, and beneficial-owner details current, and maintain a secondary payment route where possible.
